We are so honored to be featured in the Spring 2015 issue. Melanie Royals, our founder and creative director here at Royal Design Studio, was interviewed by the magazine about her business. Let’s take a look at how her passion for stenciling began, how her business took off, and why stenciling should be the go-to for patterned home décor:
Melanie Royals is the perfect example of someone who has made their life-long passion a career. She was always surrounded by art and design, but did not discover stenciling until later. During a trip to New England, she saw examples of 17th and 18th century stenciling on the walls and furniture at some of the historical sites she visited. After returning to her home in San Diego, she immediately began designing and cutting her own stencils. After 10 years of designing and stenciling others’ homes, she launched her own stencil line – Royal Design Studio.
Melanie says, “I have always loved creating new techniques and thinking outside the box, so I began experimenting with innovative new ways to use stencils to get even more hand-painted, designer looks. Rather than looking at a simple painted stenciled pattern as an art unto itself, I always try to view stencils more as a tool for creativity.”
Other than professional decorative finishers who do work for high-end spaces, we are also known in the DIY market, as most homeowners are looking for inexpensive ways to upgrade their interiors. Melanie says, “Decorative stencils provide the ideal answer for anyone seeking to customize their walls at a low cost”.
