The hottest trend to hit home decor is stenciled stairs, except we can do one better... Our Paint, Peel & Stick Canvas™ is the perfect way to make painting pattern and stenciled style on stair risers easy, affordable, and removable! In this DIY decor project, we alternate our Moroccan Tile Stencils on the canvas to create a faux tile look - a trendy look we've been seeing everywhere from Pinterest, Instagram, and on our travels. Want to know how to do it yourself? We share the whole process in this video and you will find the supplies and steps detailed out below!
Supplies:
Buy the Tutorial Stencil Kit along with your favorite stencil and you're all set to recreate this look!
Or, buy stencil supplies separately here:
- Moroccan Tile Stencil Set
- Paint, Peel & Stick Canvas™
- Two 1.5" Royal Stencil Brushes
- Flat Black Royal Stencil Creme
- Old White Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan
- Annie Sloan Clear Wax or water-based urethane
- Foam rollers and tray, paper towels, painter's tape, scissors, ruler, craft knife
Step 1: Measure your stair risers, then cut the Paint, Peel & Stick Canvas™ to those dimensions.
Step 2: Paint the Old White Chalk Paint® background color onto the cut canvas.
Step 3: Use the tile silhouette shape that comes with the Moroccan Tile Stencil Set to create alternating tile background colors. Use the Flat Black Royal Stencil Creme as the alternate color.
Step 4: Stencil the Moroccan Tile Stencils onto the canvas, painting the white on black and black on white. Be sure to offload your stencil brush onto a paper towel to remove the excess paint and avoid paint from bleeding under the stencil. Alternate the patterns and colors until the canvas is completely stenciled. Allow to dry.
Step 5: Seal and protect the painted canvas with Annie Sloan Clear Wax or water-based urethane. Allow to dry.
Step 6: To install your stenciled canvas, simply peel back the protective backing paper from one edge. Apply the canvas onto the stair riser and continue to peel back as you smooth it. Use a squeegee or credit card to burnish the canvas and remove air bubbles.
Step 7: Trim away any excess canvas with a sharp craft knife.
What if you're looking for more of a summertime fun look? You're in luck! We switched it up with Barcelona Orange, Provence, and Florence Chalk Paint®. It completely changes the look of these stairs! Stencils can be used in a variety of ways and in a variety of colors. PLUS our Paint, Peel & Stick Canvas® can be removed and replaced with other stenciled styles. So you can change up your stair style every season, occasion, or whenever you fancy a makeover! Now that opens up a LOT of pattern possibilities... (be right back, we're daydreaming of our next stenciled stairs project!).
