Have you ever wanted an urban style loft bedroom, but didn’t live anywhere close to the city? Jessica of Designer’s Sweet Spot didn’t let that stop her!
She created a faux brick wall for her son’s bedroom with our Brick Wall Trompe L’oeil Stencil. Can you believe that it’s not real brick?? We’ll share how she did it, so you can surprise your house guests too!
This bedroom already had gray and red walls when Jessica and her family moved in. So dark and dreary! Her son was set on having a brick wall in his room, but how could Jessica manage that? She didn’t want to damage her walls with real brick or wallpaper. That’s where we come in! She found our Brick Wall Trompe L’oeil Stencil and knew she could now make her son’s dream room come to life without the hassle of putting up real brick or hanging wallpaper.
She decided that one of the gray walls would be perfect to stencil directly on top of because it would save time, money, and would help give the brick pattern a worn and aged look. She used a lighter gray to paint the first brick layer. She used a level and began at the center of the wall, then worked her way out. This stenciling technique is recommended because it will keep the pattern centered visually and will create a natural look for rooms that don’t have square or straight walls. To create the aged and worn look of real brick, she used an up and down stippling painting technique and did not cover the entire surface of each brick.
Now on to paint the second layer! Jessica used a mix of brick red, soft white, and three shades of grey to create the brick color. She lined up the stencil so that she would paint this second layer on top of the light grey layer.
The final coat was with a gold colored paste wax, which helped give the faux brick wall an antique appearance. She applied the wax with a large waxing brush around the edges of each stenciled brick to add more depth and character to the grout areas.
Whoa! Now look at that! Even after listing out the steps for this DIY tutorial, we are still amazed that this is a faux brick wall! Has your guests had a similar reaction – they can’t believe that your stenciled room isn’t decorated with wallpaper or professionally done?
